Interpol is an American rock band from New York City that formed in 1997. The band’s original line-up consisted of Paul Banks (vocals, guitar), Daniel Kessler (guitar, vocals), Carlos Dengler (bass guitar, keyboards), and Greg Drudy (drums, percussion). Drudy left the band in 200 and was later replaced by Sam Fogarino. After the group finish recording their fourth album in 2010, Dengler left to pursue personal side projects.
Interpol first started performing at the Luna Lounge, along with other bands like The Strokes, Longwave, The National, and Stellastarr. They are one of the many bands associated with the New York City indie music scene, and was one of the several groups that emerged from the post punk revival stage of the 2000s. Interpol’s sound mixes staccato bass with rhythmic, harmonized guitar, and the snare. Their lyrics are composed by all members of the band, rather than having one chief songwriter.
Interpol’s debut album, Turn on the Bright Lights, was released in 2002 and was critically acclaimed. It reached the number 10 spot on the NME’s list of top albums that year, and also peaked number one on Pitchfork Media’s Top 50 Albums of 2002. Their later albums, Antics and Our Love to Admire, are what started the bands initial success. Their fourth self-titled album was released in 2010, before the band went on a two year hiatus while they focused on other projects. Their fifth studio album, El Pintor, comes out next week on September 9.
