Tune-Yards (stylized as tUnE-yArDs) is the music project of Merrill Garbus. The musical group consist of Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner. When performing live, Garbus creates drum loops on the spot, and layers these with ukulele, and vocals, in addition to electric bass played by Brenner.
The first Tune-Yards album was titled, Bird-Brains. It was recorded using a handheld voice recorder. The vinyl was released in 2009, via Marriage Records. In July 2009, Tune-Yards signed to 4AD, and limited edition version of the album was released. Their follow up album, Whokill, and two of it’s singles “Bizness” and “Gangsta” received mentions on many top 2011 album charts and song list including, Time Magazine, Rolling Stone, Spin, and the New York Times.
Tune-Yards most recent album is titled, Nikki Nack, and was released via 4AD in May of this year. The first single was titled “Water Fountain.”
