Of Montreal is an American rock band from Athens, Georgia. Kevin Barnes founded the group in 1996, and named the band after a failed romance with a women “of Montreal.” They are currently singed to Elephant 6 Collective. Throughout the years, Of Montreal’s musical style has evolved from the late 60’s Beatles influence, to a mixture of electronic, funk, psychedelic, and glam music influenced by artists including, Prince and David Bowie.
Of Montreal has released a total of 12 studio albums. In 2013, Of Montreal posted an announcement on their Facebook page stating that their new album, Lousy with Sylvianbriar, had been completed. Barne’s wrote the album while on a “self imposed isolation experiment in San Francisco” that he embarked on in early 2013. The album was musically inspired by groups The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Lousy with Sylvianbriar’s first single was entitled “Fugitive Air.”
Of Montreal recently released a personal film titled “The Past Is a Grotesque Animal.” The movies website introduces the film by stating, “The Past Is a Grotesque Animal” is a personal, accessible portrait of an artist – of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes – whose pursuit to make transcendent music at all costs drives him to value art over human relationships. As he struggles with all of those around him, family and bandmates alike, he’s forced to reconsider the future of the band, begging the question – is this really worth it?” The film can be streamed on the movies website. Below is a trailer for the documentary.
