Homegrown artist, DJ, VJ, and founder of Stones Throw Records Peanut Butter Wolf (AKA Chris Manak) joins us this November at the Brick & Mortar.
Peanut Butter Wolf got his music career off the ground in the early 90’s as producer and DJ for MC Charizma, who tragically lost his life to gun violence in 1993 at the tender age of 20. He eventually began DJing and producing instrumental material as a way of coping, and three years later founded Stones Throw Records in efforts to promote the San Francisco turntableism and MC scene. Peanut Butter Wolf’s albums include Peanut Butter Breaks, released in 1994 via Heyday records, and My Vinyl Weighs a Ton via Copasetik Records in 1999. He has worked closely with J Dilla and Madlib (he actually followed in Madlib’s footsteps and moved to Los Angeles in 2001).
Artists signed to Stones Throw Records include J Rocc, Madlib, Anika, and Strong Arm Steady, and the label previously also signed J Dilla, Aloe Blacc, and Mayer Hawthorne. Peanut Butter Wolf moreover created a compilation of Stones Throw Artists’ material for Adult Swim in 2006 titled Chrome Children.
Fans of DJ Shadow (another hometown hero), Cut Chemist, Dr. Octogon, and Kid Koala should definitely check out this opportunity to listen to Peanut Butter Wolf throw down some wicked beats in the Bay.
