Galactic is a funk and jazz group from New Orleans, Louisiana. The group originally formed in 1994 as an octet under the name of, Galactic Prophylactic. Today, the band consist of Robert Mercurio (bassist), Jeff Raines (guitarist), Richard Vogel (organist), Stanton Moore (drummer), Ben Ellman (saxophonist), and Corey Glover (vocals).
Galactic’s music style has developed over the years from New Orleans funk, to a more modern style that incorporates elements of hip hot, electronica, fusion, and jazz. Drummer Stanton Moore uses phrase samplers to sample a rhythm which he can replay over tracks producing intricate and layered drum sounds. The saxophonist, Ben Ellman, often distorts his instruments to the point where they almost sound like an electric guitar.
Galactic’s latest album release is, Carnivale Electricos, which was released in 2012. In February of this year, Galactic released a single titled “Higher and Higher” featuring JJ Grey. The single was released on Anti- Records, the label they are currently signed to.
