Bat For Lashes has released a new single called “Skin Song” via Soundcloud. This new song is a part of a creative collaboration between medical professionals and musicians in the U.K. The project, called “Body of Songs”, is due out in 2015, according to Consequence of Sound.
The Bat For Lashes song that is included on the compilation touches on the possible functions of our body’s largest organ, as well as on the human experience with lyrics like:
“I’ve blushed and I have bruised
Felt the passing of youth
I’ve bled and I have healed”
The creators of the project provided the following explanation via Youtube, according to Zumic.com. They explained that the process was an exploration of why a chosen bodily organ works, and what can cause it to fail. The artists were “[g]uided by medical experts including pathologists, neurologists, stem cell scientists, patients at varying stages of illness and confronting the organs themselves.” Taking into account this medical knowledge, and their own personal experiences and feelings, the artists crafted songs that examine their chosen organ.
“Skin Song” by Bat For Lashes pairs Natasha Khan’s haunting vocals with an atmospheric synth track. The track and her voice are underpinned with a low rumbling bass line to tie it all together.
