Bastille is an English rock band that formed in 2010. They began as a solo project by singer-songwriter Dan Smith who later decided to form the band. The band consists of lead singer Dan Smith, Chris Wood, William Farquharson and Kyle Simmons. The name of the band derives from Bastille Day, The French National Day that commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution with the Storming of the Bastille on July 14. This day also marks lead singer Dan Smith’s Birthday.

In 2010, Bastille signed a record contract with Virgin Records. Their debut single, “Overjoyed,” was released two years later. Their debut studio album, Bad Blood, was released in March 2013 and made the Top UK Albums Chart. Bastille was nominated for four Birt Awards at the 2014 ceremony, including British Breakthrough Act, British Group, British Single of the Year, and British Album of the Year, winning the British Breakthrough Act title. Bastille has sold over two million records in the UK alone.

Bastille’s number one hit “Pompeii” has been certified triple platinum by the RIAA, and the music video has more than 100 million views. The track hit number one on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart for four consecutive weeks, and topped the adult Alternative Songs chart for two weeks. Their follow up single “Bad Blood” hit Top 5 on Alternative Charts.
