On October 3rd, you can either head to The Electric factory to see The Airborne Toxic Event. Or you can head over to Union Transfer for The Afghan Whigs.
The rock legends hailing from Cincinnati Ohio have been around since 1986. They evolved out of the grunge movement taking on tones of garage punk and later moving towards a soul sound. They released their first album in 1988, but their major-label debut wouldn’t come until 1993 with their fourth album, Gentlemen.
The band officially disbanded in 2011, with lead singer Greg Dulli claiming that they would never get back together. All of that changed in 2012, when they announced that they would reunite for a slew of major concerts. Their first performance was on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Their first concert after reuniting was met with enthusiastic reviews with one concertgoer going on to write, “Regardless of how the surprising reunion of the Afghan Whigs turns out, their show last night at the Bowery Ballroom will go down as the ’90s alt-rock heroes’ gretest concert ever.”
They would go on to release two new records in 2012, the song “See and Don’t See” as well as a cover of Frank Ocean’s “Lovecrimes.” And then at last year’s SXSW we were treated to a surprise performance from Usher. The Afghan Whigs had been billed as the night’s headliners but would eventually become Usher’s “backup band” in what was one of the best performances of the weekend. In April of this year, The Afghan Whigs released their first album in 16 years, Do to the Beast. Head to Union Transfer this October for this must-see event!
