In a rare acoustic solo performance, Josh Homme, frontman of the band Queens of the Stone Age, will play the 21st Meltdown, at the Royal Festival Hall in London on June 16th.
James Lavelle, responsible for such collaborations as UNKLE’s Psyence Fiction and Never, Never, Land, with such artists as 3D of Massive Attack, DJ Shadow, Nick Cave, Thom Yorke Mike D of Beastie Boys, has been chosen to curate Meltdown 2014.
In the theme of collaboration, innovation and the spirit of non-conformism, James is working with the youth to curate the festival. Lavelle hopes to make this year’s Meltdown special by, “mobilizing the next generation to become inventors of their own culture.”
To celebrate the label James created as a teenager, Mo’Wax, which also turns 21 in 2014, Lavelle and the Southbank Center have put together an interactive exhibition for the festival called, Mo’Wax21: Urban Archaeology.
As curator of Meltdown 2014, Lavelle joins a long list of music great’s the likes of David Bowie, Morrissey, Patti Smith, Elvis Costello, Jarvis Cocker and last year’s honoree, Yoko Ono.
When asked by UNKLE.COM, Joshua Homme said, “James Lavelle is an art general. He gathers troops from different backgrounds and areas of expertise and finds a way to bring them into harmony. He helms their differences into a unique amalgam that could not have existed without him. He somehow conducts this strange orchestra into a delicate and bizarre beauty.”
Tickets go on sale on Thursday 15 May at 10am to Southbank Centre Members and on general sale at 10am on Friday 16 May. For your best chance to get tickets, you will need to become a Southbank Centre Member.
