The War on Drugs is an American indie rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that formed in 2005. The musical group consists of Adam Granduciel (vocals, guitar), David Hartley (bass, guitar), Robbie Bennett (keyboards, guitar) and Patrick Berkery (drums).

The group was origionally founded by Granduciel and Kurt Ville. Their debut studio album, Wagonwheel Blues, was released in 2008. Ville departed shortly after the release to focus on his solo career. The War on Drug’s second studio album titled, Slave Ambient, was released in 2011, and extensive touring followed. Their latest album, Lost in the Dream, was released in the spring of this year. A week before it’s release, the album was streamed in it’s entirety on NPR’s “First Listen.”

Lost in the Dream was released through Secretly Canadian. The album debuted at number 26 on Billboard 200, and received universal acclaim. The album took over two years to record, and was characterized by multiple rewrites. Granduciel’s lyrical theme was influenced by the loneliness and depression he faced after touring; he had hard time adjusting to everyday life. He stated in an article of the guardian, “It started to spiral into emotional distress and physical manifestations of depression and paranoia.”
