Arcade Fire managed to pull out all stops, once again, at their set for weekend 2 of Coachella. Billboard has reported the Canadian indie gods pulled Beck onstage this time, to help them do a cover of Prince’s 1981 hit “Controversy.”
During a Minneapolis stop on their Reflektor tour last month, Arcade Fire had paid homage to the Minnesota-born Prince with cover of the same song – according to Rolling Stone, frontman Win Butler even wore a digital box on his head, throughout the song, that featured the faces of Prince and Rep. Michele Bachmann.
For their second Coachella 2014 set, the group enlisted co-festival performer Beck to sing the song, and he did it donning the same Pope Francis bobblehead actor Aaron Paul was rumored to have worn during Arcade Fire’s performance at last weekend’s fest.
This continues Arcade Fire’s streak of having other famed musicians join their sets, as at last weekend’s Coachella, Blondie’s Debbie Harry stepped up on stage to sing “Heart of Glass” alongside Butler’s wife and co-vocalist, Régine Chassagne.
The band also threw in somewhat of a Daft Punk cover earlier last night – audience members claimed to have heard Butler say the words “Paft Dunk” before bringing out two performers wearing robot costumes similar to those worn by the French electro-music duo.
The costumed pair played out a slowed down version of Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” and while there’s yet to be a video released for Beck and Arcade Fire’s surely exquisite “Controversy,” we do have footage from the Paft Dunk performance, here:
