Aretha Franklin, known as the Queen of Soul, is an American singer and musician. Franklin started her career singing gospel at her father’s church as a child. By the age of 18, Franklin started her secular career and recorded with Columbia Records. Later, she signed to Atlantic Records where she achieved great success with her hit songs “Respect,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” and “Think.” To this day, Franklin is known as one of the most influential and important voices in the history of American music, with a repertoire that spans pop, soul, jazz, rock, blues and gospel.
In 1985, Franklin released her fourth album, Who’s Zommin’ Who, which became her first album to be certified platinum after selling well over a million copies. Franklin has achieved high ranking spots on music charts for nearly five decades, and her live performances have been seen by millions. Franklin has also been awarded with multiple national and internatinal awards as well as accolades and global recognition on a unprecedented scale. In 1999, Franklin received the National Medal of Arts. Later in 2005, she received a Presidential Medal of Freedom honor (the U.S.A.’s highest civilian honor). More recently in 2009, Franklin was titled No. 1 Vocalist of All Time byRolling Stone Magazine.
In total, Franklin has won over 18 Grammy Awards, and is one of the best-selling female artists of all time. To date, she has sold over 75 million records worldwide. She was the first female performer inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. She was also inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame (2005) and the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2012).
