After 25 years of making music as Plaid, the electronic music duo has announced new material. Plaid says it will release Reachy Prints, its tenth studio album, in May 2014. Andy Turner and Ed Handley have also put out the first single from the new work, scheduled to come out May 20th on Warp Records.
Plaid’s newest post-techno beat, “Hawkmoth,” is a syncopated masterpiece full of both synth and accentuated instrumentals. “Hawkmoth” is proof of the evolution of the British electronica duo’s work; much like Plaid’s 2011 album scintilli, the music is slower, dreamier and seems less focused on dance beats. The IDM sound is still there, but it’s toned down and much softer in its feel, if not its complexity. It’s easy to see how “Hawkmoth” is almost a continuation of the lighter feel on scintilli and if the first single is any indication, Reachy Prints may employ the same dynamic.
The duo got its first start with 1991’s Mbuki Mvuki and has been a known name on the electronic music front ever since. Their early years as a band included being the founding members of The Black Dog, another electronic group that happened to also feature musician Ken Downie. Unable to find a record label, the trio began Black Dog Productions, which released several records before Turner and Handley decided to focus solely on the music of Plaid. Plaid’s influence reached further than just the band itself; the duo has collaborated with artists like Bjork and Nicolette and done remixes for Goldfrapp.
Reachy Prints is officially out on May 20th, continuing Plaid’s 25-year electronic legacy and bringing fans some new material.
