All Grown Up
Shit Robot’s We Got A Love sounds like the guys from P-Funk impregnated Studio 54 and that love child grew up in the ’80s in a dumpster behind a warehouse in Chicago spending most of his time huffing paint, sneaking into raves and dancing with girls way out of his league. Jump to 2014, and now he’s just making sense of it all.
Shit Robot (aka Marcus Lambkin) is an Irish producer who started DJing in the ’90s. He’s put out many singles, but We Got A Love is only Shit Robot’s second album, released on James Murphy’s (formerly of LCD Soundsystem) DFA Records. The album isn’t short on collaborative star power. Soulful funny man Reggie Watts adds vocals on two songs, including the title track, “We Got A Love.” Other contributors include Museum of Love, Nancy Wang, Lidell Townsell, Luke Jenner and Holly Backler. Each featured artist brings their flavor to the album and helps to ward off electronic music’s mortal sin: getting stale.
Throughout the album, it’s impossible not to hear Shit Robot’s influences: in the group vocals on “Do It (Right),” you hear LCD Soundsystem; in the keys on “Do That Dance,” Stevie Wonder; “The Secret” reeks of Reggie Watts’ usual loop and destroy tactics; and the vocals on “Feels Real” squeal like the Bee Gees.
That said, the songs on We Got A Love have the potential to fuel some serious dancing. What Shit Robot has done is draped your favorite house/funk/dance elements over a relentless high hat and kick drum in an all-new way. What he’s done isn’t terribly unique, but it is done well and has the legs to keep a party going.
