Beastie Boys and toy company Goldieblox have come to an agreement after the band sued the company for using its song “Girls” in one of its advertisements. There’s no word on how the two parties settled the lawsuit, the terms of it or how much money was involved, but the case has now been dismissed.
The problem began when Goldieblox used the rap trio’s very popular (and as the toy company claimed, also highly sexist) song, “Girls.” They used it in a commercial that showed young girls playing with a Rube Goldberg-type device and argued that under the Fair Use Doctrine, they had the right to use the track, and they filed lawsuit for their right to do so. Although Beastie Boys said that they were impressed with the parody, they fired back with a lawsuit for copyright infringement, claiming that none of their music could be used in an advertisement, per the living will of deceased member Adam Yauch. This isn’t the first time Beastie Boys has had to go after a company for doing just that: Monster Energy Drink has also been taken to court over the issue.
