Electric rock duo Phantogram formed in New York in 2007. The duo consists of Josh Carter (vocals, guitars) and Sarah Barthel (vocals, keyboards) who have been friends since junior high. The two say the name ‘Phantogram’ was partially inspired by an optical allusion called a phantogram, in which two-dimensional images appear to be three-dimensional. The duo has released two studio albums, Eyelid Movies in 2009 and Voices in 2014. They have also produced four EPs and eight singles.

The two started recording and writing in a remote barn in upstate New York called Harmony Lodge. They describe their sound as “street beat, psych pop.” According to Josh Carter, their music has “lots of rhythms, swirling guitars, spacey keyboards, echoes, airy vocals.” Their most recent album, Voices, includes the  single “Fall in Love.” The two also produced song for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Soundtrack titled “Lights.”

Phantogram has played multiple large music festivals, including Coachella, Sasquatch, Bannaroo, Lollapalooza, South By Southwest, and more. They have also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. An Alternative Press review on Phantogram’s latest album,Voices, gave them four-and-a-half starts out of 5. The review stated that the duo “pulls away from the pack…Phantogram’s electronic and electric guitar alchemy has simultaneously become more infectious and complex than ever before.”
