The group announced an “indefinite hiatus” in 2007, but their last album was 2005’s Why Should the Fire Die? The new album, A Dotted Line, will be the end of a nine-year hiatus for members Chris Thile and Sean and Sara Watkins. It is set to drop on April 1. Nickel Creek will tour in support of this album with dates in the spring and summer of 2014, including stops at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and the Newport Folk Festival.

The band formed in 1989, and as they approached the 25th anniversary of Nickel Creek, the members decided they should mark the occasion. They got together in 2013 to begin writing again, and came away with six new co-written songs. In addition to the six tracks they wrote together, the upcoming album will include one song written by Thile and one written by Sean Watkins. Two cover songs will also appear on A Dotted Line: “Where Is Love Now” by Sam Phillips and “Hayloft” by Mother Mother.

Of the group getting back together, Sara Watkins says, “We were excited every day to be there. Having grown up singing together, there is something natural about our voices and it’s really fun to harmonize. Our voices have come to match each other’s really well. Sean and I are siblings, and Chris is about as close to a sibling as you could get.”
