Rock band Alice in Chains from Seattle, Washington, will play Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theatre, April 28.
Alice in Chains gained fame in 1990 when they signed to Columbia Records. Other Seattle grunge bands that gained success in this time period include Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Alice in Chains was one of the most successful selling over 25 million albums worldwide, 14 million being in the United States alone. In 1992, Alice in Chains released Dirt which has been certified quadruple platinum. The band has landed two No. 1 spots on Billboard with The Jar of Flies EP and their self titled album. In addition, Alice in Chains have had 14 top ten songs on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, 21 top 40 singles, and 8 Grammy Nominations.
The band has been repeatedly labeled as “grunge” by media, along with “hard rock,” “alternative rock,” “sludge metal,” etc. Frontman Jerry Cantrell identifies the band as primarily heavy metal, “We’re a lot of different things … I don’t quite know what the mixture is, but there’s definitely metal, blues, rock and roll maybe a touch of punk. The metal part will never leave, and I never want it to.” The Edmonton Journal once stated, “Living and playing in Seattle might have got them the grunge tag, but they’ve always pretty much been a classic metal band to the core.” With multiple titles regarding the bands genre, Cantrell stated, “When we first came out we were metal. Then we started being called alternative metal. Then grunge came out and then we were hard rock. And now, since we’ve started doing this again I’ve seen us listed as: hard rock, alternative, alternative metal and just straight metal. I walked into an HMV the other day to check out the placement and see what’s on and they’ve got us relegated back into the metal section. Right back where we started!”
Title them what you want, but if heavy music is of your interest, see Alice in Chains play Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theatre.
