of Montreal @ Union Transfer 5/12

of Montreal, currently touring Europe in support of their latest album, have added some new tour dates to their schedule – with a stop in Philly! They’ll head to Union Transfer on May 12th. They were last here promoting the album in October but Union Transfer promises even “more fun and high jinks” in store for us this spring.

The dynamic and ever-evolving band have shifted gears once again with their latest installation. The band’s newest album Lousy with Sylvianbriar (their 12th to date) was released in October of last year. Much of the inspiration for the album came from frontman Kevin Barnes’ time spent relocating to San Francisco. The influence of the California setting as well as Barnes’ desire to utilize a more classic approach are readily apparent throughout Lousy with Sylvianbriar. With a fresh batch of musicians and his 24-track tape machine, Kevin Barnes brought us an album which pays homage to the greats from the ’60s and 70s which inspired the work.

Last week, of Montreal debuted the video for “She Ain’t Speakin’ Now.” The video, which was directed by Barnes’ wife Nina along with Eddie Whelan, features trippy psychedelic images which match the feel of the album, transporting us back to the late ’60s. Of the track, Barnes writes “I wrote the song when both my wife and daughter were bedridden with a terrible illness.” Fortunately, both wife and daughter recovered. But Barnes says he was “paranoid about catching what they had” and that he “wrote the song while fearing the worst.”

Opening for of Montreal this May will be Dream Tiger (a solo project from WHY’s Liz Wolf). Dream Tiger’s debut album, Self, was released in July of last year. You can stream the album in its entirety here. Tickets for the show are on sale now.
