Earl Sweatshirt has confirmed that he and Tyler, the Creator – his Odd Future bandmate – will record and release an album under their EarlWolf moniker.
This week’s NME features an exclusive interview with Earl Sweatshirt, wherein the rapper discusses the release of his debut album, Doris; his admiration for Kanye West; and future plans for the Los Angeles-based group, Odd Future.
It has recently become clear that Earl Sweatshirt and Odd Future frontman Tyler, the Creator have struck up an alliance. Adopting the name EarlWolf, the duo performed together at last month’s Reading And Leeds Festivals and have also been supporting Eminem on tour. According to Sweatshirt, the two plan on making an album, but are waiting for enough time to “sit down” and record it in one fell swoop. In Sweatshirt’s own words,
“We’ll do the record when we’re ready to sit down for a month and a half and do it in one. It’d be shitty if it was spread out. That’s how I want to do shit from now on; that’s what I learned from doing ‘Doris’. Trying to piece shit together that’s hella spread out kinda sucks. You hit a lot more walls trying to make it sync.”
It does not appear, however, that this new alliance will affect Odd Future’s, well, future. In fact, the group released a new single, Partners In Crime, only a few days ago.
It is worth noting, however, that both Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, the Creator have been doing quite a bit of solo work as of late. While Odd Future will perform at this year’s OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) Festival, Tyler, the Creator will also headline at the festival as solo act. One of Tyler’s solo tracks, “Garbage”, will also be featured exclusively on FlyLo FM in the new Grand Theft Auto V.
Similarly, Earl Sweatshirt recently featured on Captain Murphy’s new track “Between Villains”, which aired on the Adult Swim Singles Series. When asked to talk more about how Odd Future’s other members were feeling about the recent shifts within the group, Sweatshirt “insisted that things were ‘cool’ with Odd Future, despite various members of the rap collective branching out to work on different projects, and said that he and his bandmates ‘still have the OF pillow to fall back on'”.
