Day three of the Electric Zoo Festival was cancelled today. The electronic music festival’s final day of celebrations was apparently cancelled due to two deaths and several suspected OD’s, the New York City Mayor’s office announced earlier today.
From the city’s official statement,
“During the first two days of the Electric Zoo music festival, two concert-goers have died and at least four others became critically ill and have been placed in intensive care at area hospitals. Definitive causes of death have not yet been determined, however, both appear to have involved the drug MDMA (ecstasy, or molly).”
The two fatalities were rushed to the hospital and died shortly after. Jeffrey Russ, 23 of Rochester and Olivia Rotundo, 20, of Procidence, R.I. were the two who lost their lives due to overdoses of MDMA or “molly.”
The show was cancelled following a heartfelt reach-out by festival leaders to the families of the deceased,
“The founders of Electric Zoo send our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who passed away this weekend. Because there is nothing more important to us than our patrons, we have decided in consultation with the New York City Parks Department that there will be no show today.”
The annual Electric Zoo Festival, which takes place on Randall’s Island every Labor Day Weekend, has not been the first music event fatality this year. Artist Zedd canceled a show following a death and two overdoses at one of his shows just this past week. Flying Lotus had humbling experience recently when a fan died of cardiac distress preceding his performance at HARD Festival in early August.
