Revocation – Revocation

Technically Infectious

Revocation is a relatively young metal act from Boston, Massachusetts that has released three albums and an EP. Impressively, they managed to sign to well-known label Relapse Records a year after their debut was independently released. Revocation is a band that is notable for their odd combination of technical death metal and thrash metal, which results in a fairly distinct sound that is easily recognizable. With fast paced tempos, extreme guitar riffs and destructive vocals, their music is likely to appeal to any diehard fan of metal. Their latest offering, however, a self-titled album out on Relapse, is likely to be considered by many as their finest effort to date.

As with their previous albums, Revocation features a strong thrash metal and technical death metal sound. Certainly, it’s an interesting combination rarely used, despite the continued popularity of both subgenres. The drums are played at fiery speed, with blast beats and double bass action. This element, along with the extreme vocal delivery, is the death metal side of the music. The guitars, on the other hand, contain structures, tempos and arrangements typically associated with thrash metal, such as single note and sweep picking and harmonious whammy bared solos. As such, the album is an accomplished piece of art thanks to its jaw dropping technicality and variation.

There are also certain tracks that especially stand out from the rest of the release. The seventh track, “Invidious,” is a monstrous number which features difficult guitar compositions, impressive progression and a strong abundance of elements and patterns. Additionally, the guitar solo on this song is especially memorable. Another highlight to mention is the third track, “Archfiend,” which features interesting guitar melodies. It even includes a brief interlude acoustic piece before leading into a beautiful mid tempo guitar solo.

Overall, Revocation have successfully unleashed an astonishing metal album that is worth hearing. What makes them particularly exceptional is that they have molded their own sound that is quite distinguishable, and as a result it makes their music exciting.
