WATCH: Icona Pop Release New Video for Song “Girlfriend”

Bubblegum pop duo Icona Pop released a video for their 2pac-inspired cover of the 90s song “Girlfriend” today. With a few tweaks in the lyrics, and the addition of a pop melody, the two friends altered the popular 90s rap into a 21st century dance song.

The Swedish-based pop group released their video after announcing their fall North American tour as well as fall release date for their album This Is…

The catchy, bubbly version of “Girlfriend” fits with the formation of the group. Made up of two best friends, Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt, the duo met and instantly connected. As SPIN magazine quoted, Jawo claims that “I was so consumed in my own life…and then when I met her everything changed.” Having just come from an intense breakup, Aino Jawo couldn’t have met Caroline Hjelt at a better time, and have been taking the pop scene by storm, including their self-titled EP released last year. Watch their free-spirited video for “Girlfriend” below.
