Folk legend Richie Havens has passed away at age 72.
JamBase is reporting Richie Havens has passed away at age 72 from a heart attack he suffered at his home in New City, New Jersey.
Havens is most remembered for opening Woodstock and putting on an incredible memorable performance on video, which you can watch below. Havens had a distinct voice and became a folk icon during the protest era in the 60s. He released 21 studio albums and toured for over 45 years until he had to call it quits for health reasons in 2012. Havens spent his whole life delivering messages based on the things he believed in, brotherhood and personal freedom. In 1991 he won the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience award.
