Indie folksters Milo Greene performed at El Rey Theatre Saturday night. The rain was hardly a deterrent for fans as the show almost sold out. Undoubtedly, the dreamlike quintet delivered a solid set.
Easing into their highly anticipated performance, MG started out with an older jam “Staging Point.” Their airy harmonizing blended with the consistent soft pangs of the tambourine, building a sound that could only be described as M83 trying to cover Fleetwood Mac – a new take on an classic approach. Toss in a banjo and some jingle bells, and you’ve got yourself one hell of a Los Angeles native indie band.
“We’ve been gone for six weeks. This is our home. You don’t know how good it feels to be here.” The modest folks could not express enough gratitude for the journey that brought them to such a reputable venue. Working their way up from Bootleg Theater to The Satellite to Troubador to El Rey was quite an epic process. Apparently it was just epic enough that they felt the need to repeatedly thank the crowd between songs. The sweetest compensation for fan support was an unadulterated set in their hometown. A couple of covers and “sexy” songs later, MG had created an ethereal ambience that was totally worth the six-week wait.
They beckoned friends from Bahamas to join them on stage for their encore covering Wilco’s “A Shot in the Arm.” By the end of the night, the sound filled out, making up for the fluffy gratuitous interjections between songs. No need to thank us, Milo Greene, we thank you.
