Beautiful Blossoming
Hey Rosetta! is a six-piece indie rock band from Canada. The band members include Tim Baker (vocals, guitar, piano), Josh Ward (bass, backing vocals), Adam Hogan (lead guitar), and Phil Maloney (drums.) The band also has a string section which normally consists of Kinley Dowling (violin), and Romesh Thavanathan (cello.) Seeds is the band’s third album and was released in February 2011.
What a wholesome, solid sounding album this is. It’s a fantastic blend of instruments and vocals that flow well together, without sounding repetitive. The violin and cello that weave together throughout thier songs are beautiful. Listening to this gives the impression that the band really put their heart & soul into their work. There’s a unique quality in the band’s experimentation with the additions of symphonic elements to their music and it’s done without sounding pretentious. The melodies build with garage rock ferocity, punctuated with bursts of fiery orchestral bliss.
The vocals are slightly reminiscent of early Sufjan Stevens or Dave Matthews (Dave Matthews Band.) “Bricks” is a beautiful song with sentimental lyrics like: “It was a beautiful home we had, built with our own two hands/And the amber years we got left, gone in a single breath/One doubt from your red mouth and armies align/And once you say it you can’t take it back.” There’s storytelling in the lyrics of these wonderfully rich songs.
This is a good recommendation for fans of music by Sufjan Stevens and Coldplay, and anyone who likes lyrical depth with richly layered orchestral sounds.
