Since their early deathcore days, Job For A Cowboy has been slowly developing a pure death metal sound, and amassing the players necessary to achieve that goal. Now, with the release of Demonocracy, they have finally reached death metal nirvana. Their next record will have to move sideways, because the band would be hard pressed to move up from here.

With the addition of master bassist Nick Schendzielos (Cephalic Carnage), the band is fully capable of unleashing hell in all its forms. Opener “Children Of Deceit” is a marvelous slice of unbridled technical death metal, anchored by Johnny Davy’s powerful bellows. “Imperium Wolves” is more of a lumbering beast interspersed with chaotic guitar solos, while “Black Discharge” is swirling mosh pit material, driven by Jon Rice’s unrelenting percussive assault. “The Manipulation Stream” features nimble guitar solos aplenty from Al Glassman and Tony Sannicandro, and “The Deity Misconception” lets Schendzielos flex all his muscle on the bass. Finally, “Tarnished Gluttony” harkens back to the deathcore days of slow chugging riffs and crushing grooves, but fuelled by all those years of being in a kick-ass death metal band.

In my review of the band’s last EP Gloom, I surmised that the guys were gearing up for a change in style, and Job For A Cowboy did not disappoint on Demonocracy. Fans of the band’s death metal era will be blown away by this one, and fans of death metal (and tech-death) in particular will not want to miss this. JFAC has given us a fine contender for metal album of the year with this one. It’s going to be tough to top Demonocracy, but if any band can pull it off, it’s Job For A Cowboy.
