Air, the French duet that has won over international audiences with their spaced-out, romantic electronica, has surprising news. They have re-scored the French classic, Le Voyage Dans La Lune (A Trip to the Moon), a 14-minute silent film that first enraptured audiences over a century ago. They have extended their film score into a full length soundtrack which will be released February 7 2012 on Astralwerks and feature Au Revoire Simone and Victoria Legrand of Beach House.
French director Georges Méliés’ black and white film was first released in 1902 and is now regarded as the first film to thematically rely on science fiction. The film was loosely based on Jules Verne’s From the Earth to the Moon and H.G. Wells The First Men In The Moon, writers who were well established in science fiction.
The three producers, who painstakingly restored and colorized the film with the help of digital technology, approached Air because they wanted to put a contemporary spin on the film. For the French duet, it was a huge honor to be involved in the revival of a seminal piece of French cinema.
As musicians, Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel approached the scoring of the film as organically as possible, only using instrumentation that could be performed live. Nicolas explains, “our soundtrack is nourished by living art”. The film with the new soundtrack was first premiered at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and received enormous critical acclaim.
EMI will release a special Limited Edition version of the soundtrack, Le Voyage Dans La Lune, which will be released February 7 2012 on Astralwerks. The album will include a bonus DVD or digital download of the restored colorized film scored by Air. Only 70,000 copies will be sold globally, so fans of Air and French cinema should make sure to pick their copy up before there are none left!
