In the absence of a band to promote R.E.M.’s latest release, Part Lies, Part Truth, Part Garbage: 1982-2011 with any performance, Michael Stipe has taken to the late-night circuit to plug the record. Last week, Stipe made appearances with Stephen Colbert and Brian Eno. On Wednesday, he continued the publicity streak with stop at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The appearance should satisfy anyone interested in hearing more on the the legendary group’s split. “The three of us arrived at it king of organically,” says Stipe. “When we were on your in 2008, it kind of became an option.” Stipe also points out that the cover of this year’s Collapse Into Now foreshadowed the breakup. “I’m waving goodbye on the cover. Nobody got that.”
To round out the evening, Stipe joined Fallon, Martin Short, and The Muppets’ Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy for a game of Password. Such a disparate and famous group makes Fallon’s take on the popular word game worth a watch.
