I first saw The Soft Pack at FYF Fest last year. My two friends who are cooler than me had been raving about them all afternoon and I amiably followed them through the crowded throng to the stage in a happy “I’m finally in the freakin’ festival” daze, not knowing what to expect.
I was blown away.
They were everything a punk-garage-rock band should be- unpretentious, gritty, sincere, angsty, reckless- and I was in love. So the fact that they’re playing TONIGHT at the Hammer Museum FOR FREE is the best news I’ve heard in quite awhile. Oh, and did I mention they’re playing with Hanni El Khatib, the one man wonder band whose voice is described by the LA Times as “woodsmoke or bourbon, acrid yet sweet, as timeless as jeans and a T-shirt”? Yum. Khatib himself skips the flowery language and settles on describing his songs ideal “for anyone who’s ever been shot or hit by a train”. I must say I’ve never experienced either, but I’m a huge fan anyway.
So. Tonight. Hammer Museum. Two kick ass artists. FREE. Amazingness.
See you there.
