This Will Destroy You – Tunnel Blanket

Post-music

This Will Destroy You is a post-rock quartet from Texas, and they’ve created an outstanding dichotomy of beautiful melodies thrashed with a discordant myriad of sounds on Tunnel Blanket. With their second studio LP, the band has dropped the genre labels and has made their music a dynamic experience of sonic energy and sheer brilliance.

The first track, “Little Smoke,” clocking in at twelve minutes, definitely sets the albums tone, beginning with subtle and quaintly beautiful notes quickly altered by the crude, heavy tones of pure, harmonic power, yet this transition is seamless and provides a perfect example of the album’s direction and exciting idiosyncrasies that make it a great listen. Second song “Glass Realms,” exhibits the band’s ability to conjure symphony of a lightly ambient melodies, which close with a simple fade into the night.

“Communal Blood” is simple and rather light song with a delightful tune and attractive effects, but the track builds and builds into a crescendo of rambunctious rhythms and an apocalyptic anthem. Next, “Osario” is a provocative, dream-sequence theme that allows the listener to take a mind-altering journey into the abyss of tonal bliss. The raucous sequence of thunderous sound creates the spine-shaking emotions throughout “Black Dunes,” which is perhaps the albums heaviest tracks.

Finally, the album ends with a syncopated march and is embraced the light instrumentation and electronic sound effects, and the listener is brought down from a cosmic trance by the first human sounds uttered in the song’s ultimate finale. Tunnel Blanket is well worth a listen and perhaps a purchase especially for those tired of the typical droll of everyday music. This album will make you re-think the constructions of music and the allow one to embrace the beauty of human creativity and ingenuity.
