In the arena of “holy crap” surprises, Ratatat effectively went Godzilla over at the Mojave Tent, tearing the roof off the place on account of the accessible simplicity of their music and an eye-opening stage show. The strictly laptops and guitars duo were flanked on either side by what appeared to be full-color holographic video. A thin light grid was lengthwise behind them, and a large video wall mounted on top of that. Each and every screen displayed pro-grade–and wonderfully strange–imagery synced to every second of their set. It’s hard to say as of press time if this last piece was intentional, but even more wild was seeing the foreboding silhouette of one member or the other on top of the back video wall. The silhouette showed enough of what they were playing to give you a sense of their performance. More importantly though, it made them look 20-feet tall. Amazing rock-and-roll move, even if it was accidental. Ratatat will be headlining electro festivals on the strength of this performance, without a doubt.
