The Black Keys took a well deserved victory lap at their second billed slot at Coachella’s main stage. While they have been slowly earning fans for years–playing Coachella numerous times as well–the band has undergone a meteoric rise in popularity since we last covered them at SPIN 25 and shortly before that SXSW largely due to the strength of their last album Brothers. The duo (expanded here with a keyboardist) sounded crisp and polished. Drummer Patrick Carney pummels at his kit with a refined blues swing and singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach makes nimble fretwork and singing look easy. Most importantly, the group’s song are instantly memorable and melodic, without ever veering into saccharine pop territory.
