Old Fashioned Etiquette
A musical flash from the past mixed with exceptional vocals, a sense of despondent sadness and sweet sounds of romanticism; Among the Gold is a six track EP with Cheyenne Mize and Bonnie “Prince” Billy in a series of duets of old-fashioned songs.
This uniquely new adventure contains covers of songs dating from 1864 to 1915. Historically, music in these eras were not nearly as diverse as today’s modern age, but the instrumentals and the vocals were spot on and rather nicely done. There aren’t many instruments being used but the duo remains true to classic elements of parlor music. These retentions paint a scene from music history that was pure, raw, and filled with conviction and passion.
Mize’s softer, delightful vocals complement the sounds of the older tracks and this genre, which is evident in the EPs lead-off track “Only a Dream.” Placed towards the end of the album, “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” is a track that stands out and is easily welcomed as the EPs strongest; it truly takes the listener to another time, a rather distant epoch of musical history.
The duo provides a somber approach with their quaintly, picturesque track “Silver Threads Among the Gold.”
All in all, the rather dark, dreamy and fresh approach at these classic songs from way back when and the eclectic duo of singers leading the way, Among the Gold is worth some time and a listen. We may all learn something from they way music was and its importance on today’s sounds.
