Spunky as can be, New Jersey trio Screaming Females rocked with vintage 90’s style. Lead singer/guitarist Marissa Paternoster had the deceiving look of an unassuming twelve-year old, but could shred with the focused enthusiasm of an enraged twenty something. Paternoster’s stage presence was awkward in a charming away, meekly proposing that the band’s music was for sale elsewhere but she didn’t know where, offering, “You all look like bright intelligent people. I’m sure you’ll figure it out.” And while the banter may have been qwirky, the performance was ferocious, all banging chords with root-and-scale chord/solo changeovers while Paternoster shouted with classic riot girl intensity. A Marnie Stern for the skate rock set, Screaming Females are no joke.
