Grammy-nominated singer Carly Rae Jepsen has just released the new video for her song “Boy Problems.” The track is off Jepsen’s latest album, E·MO·TION, which is available now.
The video made its official debut on RookieMag.com and features cameos from Barbie Ferreira, Diana Veras and Tavi Gevinson. One of the most obvious truths about the song is that it’s relatable. It’s all about being obsessed with a certain someone and annoying all your friends with relentless talk of said person, which everybody has done at some point. The video accompanies the song perfectly, filled with vibrant colors, sparkles and exasperated expressions that will make you feel like a teenage girl with a crush.
Jepsen had a strong idea of the direction in which she wanted the video to take. In the press release, she speaks of being approached by director Petra Collins and their partnership with the video.
I think she has a very gifted eye for a refreshing look at youth and beauty and the way she plays with color always stands out to me. So the answer was an immediate YES! We met that first day in New York and were giddy with creating something new together and I am so pleased for how the dark and glittery scenes we imagined turned out. I hope you enjoy it!
“Boy Problems” is the newest single off Jepsen’s third album, E·MO·TION, which was released last August. The album received great critical acclaim from publications such as Rolling Stone, Spin, Vulture, Entertainment Weekly and many more. Mxdwn even included the album in its Album of the Year list at the end of 2015. Three singles had been released prior to the new video, including “I Really Like You”, “Your Type,” and “Run Away With Me,” the last of which has inspired dozens of viral memes on Vine and Twitter with users dubbing the song over movie scenes, TV clips, and other artists’ performances using the hashtag #RunAwayWithMeme.
Jepsen has been quite busy since the release of E·MO·TION. In March, she finished her “Gimmie Love” tour, which included sold-out shows all over the United States. She also received praise for her portrayal as Pink Lady “Frenchy” in FOX’s GREASE: LIVE back in February. This summer, Jepsen will perform at the Shadow of the City festival in Seaside Heights, NJ, on June 18th, and headline the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago on July 15th.
