Chillwave duo, Darkstar, and electro vocalist Lorely Rodriguez of Empress Of, collaborated on a new song called “Reformer.” The song is set to be featured in Darkstar’s forthcoming EP.
The almost four-minute long, “Reformer” is hauntingly beautiful. Lorely Rodriguez’s vocals fantastically flow over the track live the ebbs and waves of an ocean. The beat is smooth, calm and lush, and pairs perfectly with the vocals.
The song is a bit of a departure from both artists’ usual sounds. It’s much smoother, and leans more towards chillwave rather than electro-pop. This does not detract from the quality of the song, however.
“Reformer” is the first release for both musical groups since last year. The collaboration started as a friendship, and eventually led to Lorely Rodriguez being asked to come record with Darkstar at their studio. A couple recording sessions later, this gem came into fruition.
Darkstar are an English electro-chillwave duo, made up of James Young and Aiden Whalley. They’ve released several EPs and singles since their inception in 2007, and have released three studio albums thus far. Their most recent release was Foam Island, which was released last year.
Empress Of is the stage name of Lorely Rodriguez, an electro-pop vocalist based out of New York. She’s released several singles since 2012, and one EP entitled Systems, released in 2013. Her debut album, Me, was released last year on Terrible Records and XL Recordings. Catch her at Pitchfork Music Festival, where she’ll be performing later this year.
