Following her single’s release, M.I.A. has just released the video to her track “Borders.”
M.I.A., Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, has just released the video to her new track “Borders.” The track is the perfect release for its time during our current global refugee crisis. It is an obvious protest song/video and addresses the issue of why we are closing our borders globally to refugees. As reported by Pitchfork, “Borders” is off of her forthcoming fifth studio album, Matahdatah. The video can be seen below.
The video shows M.I.A. as one with a group of refugees that are at first climbing a barbed-wire fence, then cramming onto small boats and then finally drifting off into the sea at an attempt to escape their terrible war-torn homes. The video does a fantastic job at capturing the struggle that these refugees experience during their journey to a better life. Having each of the boats jammed up with hundreds of refugees and showing their seemingly exhausted faces of desperation at a better life. The song is highly emotional and addresses the current global hysteria when it comes to refugees and invites viewers to think about what is going on around them and to be more aware.
M.I.A. is actually a refugee herself from Sri Lanka, according to Nylon. She fled her native country in the middle of their three-decade-long civil war.
