MIA shared an Instagram post recently of Skrillex working along side the musician during the making of her next album, Matahdatah. The new album will follow her 2013 album Matangi.
Matahdatah has taken longer than the musician originally planned due to claims of cultural appropriation against the artist. One of her video clips was shot in Africa for a single from the new album, but she was unable to share it publicly over the internet because it was shot on the Ivory Coast in Africa. She tweeted her frustration on her personal twitter. But the artist has been able to share some of the songs before they were removed.
The new album will also include a release made up of two tracks and a self-directed short film, show in West Africa and India. The film features footage with various forms of traditional dance and appearances by MIA herself. The new single “Swords” and the revised single “Warriors” from Matangi will be found among the new track listings of songs. “The concept for this LP is ‘broader than a border’ and MATAHDATAH is the journal of MATANGI. Sometimes I move vertical and sometimes I move horizontal,” said MIA in an interview with Pitchfork.
