Indie Rock sensation Julian Casablancas, well-known as the vocalist for the American rock band The Strokes, has most recently undertaken yet another musical endeavor. Forming in Los Angeles in 2013, Julian Casablancas + The Voidz, is a six-member band, with Casablancas as the lead vocalist. Their experimental sound strays from the punkier notes that underlie the garage rock melodies of The Strokes or more alternative voice which Casablancas features in his solo work. Instead, The Voidz push the boundaries to an avant garde section of rock that features more noise and psychedelia.
In 2014 they released their debut album “Tyranny” under Casablanca’s own record label “Cult.” I recommend you give the album a listen and form your own opinions before referring to the conflicting criticisms found online, as “Tyranny” has its own unique sound that may only be appreciated by admirers of experimental music. Casablanca’s musical career, like his newest album has undergone varied criticisms, but he still has an expansive fan base who continues to appreciate the music he produces.
If you find that you enjoy “Tyranny” for its experimental, neo-psychedelic sound and are looking for a likely eccentric experience with Julian Casablanca’s most recent side project, be sure to attend their concert at San Francisco’s intimate venue, The Independent, this September.
