Hudson Mohawke’s album Lantern is arriving next month on the 16th. Today HudMo released a video for the second track off of the project, “Very First Breath” featuring Irfane.
The video for “Very First Breath” has a couple of plot twists within it. The video opens with two people talking over the phone. Presumably the two are a couple, or have feelings for each other. It is revealed that the two people are members of rival street gangs. One street gang is ran by women, and the other is ran by men. The woman in charge of her street gang stares at her knife as she is on the phone with the head guy of the opposing crew. She hangs up and her crew members get into a car and ride out. As the song is reaching its peak, the girls hop out of the car and attack the rival street gang. Between the attack montage, it is revealed that the leader of the male oriented gang and the leader of the opposing female group did in fact have a love connection. That history seems irrelevant as her group handles business swiftly, and all members leave without even a scratch on their faces. She stabs her former love interest, kicks him over, and walks away. Throughout the video the lyrics are displayed at the bottom in Japanese and English. The setting of the video, including the makeup, seems to take on the Far East Asian street culture.
The song its self features a deep bass, hard-hitting crashes, and high frequency synths from HudMo. The combination of sounds creates the image of the frantic moments leading up to the realization of heartbreak. The lyrics, sung by Irfane, further captures the listener and puts them in a place mentally where they feel the pain of “walking in the rain, sitting on this train all alone.” HudMo is steadily building a crazy anticipation for his project Lantern. The TNGHT producer revealed the third song on his upcoming project, “Ryderz” on a Rinse FM special. Hudson Mohawke’s Lantern will be hitting shelves on June 16th through Warp Records. The Lantern Tracklist can be seen below, and watch the incredibly addicting visual for the equally addicting “Very First Breath” above.
