Hit Netflix series House of Cards hosts a fiery collaboration of band members of Pussy Riot and Le Tigre.
“Don’t Cry Genocide,” is a raw new production by Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot and electrothrash band Le Tigre. The collaboration includes Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alyokhina and Le Tigre’s JD Samson and Johanna Fateman. House of Cards featured the new song in Episode 3 (Chapter 29) in the series’ third season.
While “Don’t Cry Genocide” is played in its entirety during the end credits, Tolokonnikova and Alyokhina actually have cameos in the episode as they accompany the fictitious Russian president, Viktor Petrov, on a visit to the White House. Playing themselves, they stand up in opposition to Petrov, who acts as a blatant symbol of Vladimir Putin in the show. As the dialogue concludes at the end of the episode, the song tears through the silence. The music video quickly follows with thrashing energy and impressive camerawork of both bands’ members playing for a riotous crowd.
Le Tigre has gone in a few different directions since its inception in 1998. Previous frontwoman Julie Ruin has gone on to produce solo material including her album Run Fast back in 2013 along with a a previously-unreleased song, “Blueberry Island,” late last year. Additionally, JD Samson and Johanna Fateman started a two-man electronic project called MEN in 2008.
Pussy Riot has made a ton of noise lately, both in and out of the studio. Their video for “I Can’t Breathe,” which was written in honor of Eric Garner, dropped last month. Alyokhina was arrested in Moscow last December after protesting against the impending imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Alekhina was previously arrested in February of 2014 along with Tolokonnikova in preparation for a video shoot. The two were also attacked by police.
“Don’t Cry Genocide” bursts with the unique intensities of both bands. Check out the video within the House of Cards credits below:
