Ripping it in his signature ATL fashion, Big Boi formally of Outkast, hit the stage in his hometown with the dynamic electronic rock duo Phantogram, at the Tabernacle on Tuesday night.
Performing one of their many collaborative works, “CPU”, the crowd went wild at this amazingly unexpected treat.
Starting off the performance reminding the crowd that the “Big Boi, Phantogram, Big Gram,” EP is coming soon, they rolled into the hook where Big Boi backed hollering, “Cause it’s you that’s on my mind!” Big Boi then immediately spit a verse, while Sarah Barthel danced around behind him. The performance continues in this style, of Big Boi rapping and Sarah singing, which the fans in attendance thoroughly enjoyed.
Back in April, Big Boi announced that he was working with Phantogram on the new EP called Big Grams, but collab isn’t a new thing though, almost a year ago in November, Big Boi released the single “Lines”, that featured A$AP Rocky and Phantogram.
Phantogram which is made up of Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, are known for their innovative music style- melding electronic, melodic indie rock, set to hip hop leaning beats & sample. Their latest album, VOICES, has reached unanimous critical acclaim, including being named by SPIN one of the “50 best albums of 2014,” and made an impressive #1 debut on the iTunes’ Alternative Chart and #5 on iTunes’ Top Album Chart.
The band which formed in 2007, has released four EP’s while VOICES is only it’s second full-length studio album, after 2009’s Eyelid Movies.
Phantogram has been touring to support the album VOICES which dropped in February, all through the summer and just began their fall run in September.
You can find a video of the “CPU” performance below along with another example of the super collaboration on “Objectum Shalamar” which features a sample of Jody Watley of Shalamar singing at the end.
