The Australian duo have big news about their upcoming album and a new dance hit debut. They’ve uploaded a song from the album and a video this week. Get a feel for Abandon Ship by checking out the sample track ‘Resistance.’
Knife Party will release their new album titled Abandon Ship on October 27, and if the first leaked track is any indication of the direction the two will take, it’ll be popular on the dance floor.
They’re relatively new on the scene, as their first EP 100% No Modern Talking debuted only about three years ago. They’ve already released two more EPs since, making Abandon Ship their fourth official Knife Party release. For a project that’s only technically been around since 2011, that’s not too shabby.
It’s not like the two members invented Knife Party out of thin air either. Its founders Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen are by no means new to the electronic dance music scene. The pair worked together for the first time on the prolific Australian drum and bass group Pendulum (not to be confused with the Australian ambient house band of the same name).
While writing music for Pendulum, Swire and McGrillen sketched the broad strokes of what would eventually become their side project, Knife Party. Pendulum’s music puts bass and beat at the heart of its tracks, while Knife Party is more keen on capturing the electric energy of a rave. Eventually, the pair began committing more time to Knife Party, and now fans get two potential new releases from both groups in the near future.
The new album art for Abandon Ship is bright, bold and in-your-face, much like its first new track ‘Resistance.’
The song is an unrelenting stream of synth loops and attacking layers of drum tracks. Within the first two minutes of the track, the two take listeners higher and higher, building tempo as the drum loops scream along faster and faster. Suddenly, the beat drops and an announcer says ‘This is a knife.’ Back goes the beat and the party animals on screen resume their chaotic, jumbled dancing.
The video for ‘Resistance’ mimics the flow of the song: repeating cycles of pandemonium, followed by slow, pulsating gyrations, then back to high-energy insanity. Black and white footage of random house music dancers flicker across the screen. The camera zooms in on close-ups of arms, legs, torsos, hands in the air and eyes shielded by enormous sunglasses. It zooms out to a hundred sweating bodies throbbing along to the beat of the bass.
In short, it’s everything a dedicated raver imagines a party should be like.
Knife Party is a dance party group, but one that can toss in the occasional complicated loop and make it look easy. Fans can probably expect to hear plenty more from the group in the coming weeks. They’re already gearing up a few more sample tracks from Abandon Ship that will be released in the next two months.
