Bomba Estereo is a Columbian band who’s style can best be described as electro-champeta, blending afro-tropical colombian beats and rhythms with Santigold-reminiscent vocals. Officially formed in 2005 in Bogota, the band is currently comprised of Kike Egurrola on drums, Simon Mejia on bass and keyboards, Julian Salazar on guitar, and Liliana Saumet on vocals, and are currently signed to Polen Records. They have played a number of notable music festivals, including Bonnaroo, Bumbershoot, Coachella, SXSW (their US debut), and Vive Latino. The group covered Technotronic’s early 90’s track Pump Up the Jam for Levi’s Pioneer Sessions, and their track Fuego was featured on Dexter, Argentinian drama El Puntero, and video game FIFA 10. Bomba Estereo’s album Blow Up reached #10 on Billboards list of Top World Albums.
Opening for Bomba Estereo are local bands La Misa Negra (Black Ritual) and Candelaria from Oakland. La Misa Negra is an eight-piece band that combines afro-columbian dance music with accordions, horns, and vintage 50’s style cumbia, creating vibrant rythyms and energetic rump-shakin’ beats. They debuted live in 2011 and have played with Nortec Collective, Ozomatli, Celso Piña, and Chico Trujillo.
Candelaria formed in 2006 when bassist Daniel Yockey, guitarist Adley Penner, and conga player Carlos Aguirre connected via Craigslist. With the addition of Rafael Herrera and Ali Luna on drums, producer Jesse Sheehan, and vocalist Stephani Candelaria, their formation was complete, and they soon after began work on their debut album which was recorded and mastered completely independently. Currently out of Oakland, the group’s sound is a unique blend of electronic beats, cumbia rhythms, and reggae bass. They have toured with Los Amigos Invisibles, Diego’s Umbrella, and Jimmy Cliff, and have locally they have played at The Independent, Elbo Room, and New Parish.
