Anyone playing a Johnny Cash cover is automatically setting a pretty high bar for themselves – wouldn’t do to duff something from the Man in Black. Puss n’ Boots, however, is eminently qualified. Check below for an excellent duet version of “Bull Rider”.
Puss n’ Boots might not ring any bells; the band isn’t exactly a household name. After all, they’re teetering on the release of only their first studio album. Still ,the trio’s been playing together since 2008, and a very interesting trio they are…
Norah Jones needs little introduction. The satin-voiced songstress is among the most successful jazz vocalists of the 21st century, and it does a body good to hear her on the mic again. Especially when she’s riding with Sasha Dobson, a Californian singer-songwriter and longtime Jones collaborator, and Catherine Popper, a bassist best known for her stint with Ryan Adams & The Cardinals.
One heck of a lineup right there, and we’re obviously a little excited for their debut. In the meantime, they’ve put their own twist on “Bull Rider”. The song was originally written for Johnny Cash’s Silver album, where it played second fiddle to super-mega hit “(Ghost) Riders in the Sky”. Puss n’ Boots do it full justice – not every day you get to hear Jones and Dobson going line for line on a country classic.
