Ásgeir, the 21 year old Icelandic sensation is headed to the US for a handful of shows this summer. Among them will be a stop in Philly, with a performance at Milkboy. The show, presented by XPN is scheduled for July 17th.
A lot of buzz has been circulating around the talented new singer. Ásgeir released his debut album in 2012. Several songs from the album made their way to the top of the Icelandic Singles Chart, the Tónlist. The album itself became the best selling Icelandic debut album ever. As a result of the enormous success he received in his home country, Ásgeir was approached by John Grant, an American musician, who offered to translate the album for an English audience. The English version of the album was released in January under the name In the Silence.
The originial Icelandic version of Ásgeir’s album was recorded over the course of a few months in the summer of 2012. Most of the lyrics were written by his father, a poet. And while everything is essentially the same, the album feels almost as if it’s a completely new record. The “deeply romantic, thoughtful lyrics” have certainly impressed the audience at home. It’s said that his album can be found in a tenth of all Icelandic homes. Slowly but surely, he’s also making a name for himself across the pond, as American audiences are catching on to this burgeoning young talent. Be sure to check out Ásgeir’s video for the single “King and Cross.” And go see him when he comes to Milkboy this summer!
