Alternative rock band Hum is hitting the road in 2027, and they will be making a stop at Terminal 5 on May 22. This tour will be their first headline run since 2019.
Hum was formed in Champaign, Illinois in 1989 by guitarist and vocalist Matt Talbott, Andy Switzky, Akis Boyatzis, and Jeff Kropp. After a series of lineup changes, the band settled on a core lineup by 1993: Matt, bassist Jeff Dimpsey, lead guitarist Tim Lash, and drummer Bryan St. Pere. Their major label debut, You’d Prefer An Astronaut, was released in 1995. The album’s second single “Stars” became Hum’s most popular and highest-charting song, peaking at No. 11 on Billboard’s Hot Modern Rock Tracks and No. 28 on Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks. They followed up this record with Downward is Heavenward, their final album before the band’s disbandment in 2000. Hum would perform together sporadically in the following years before reuniting more permanently in 2015 to head out on tour with Failure. They returned in 2020 with a surprise record drop. Inlet would go on to reach No. 15 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart and No. 30 on the Billboard Current Album Sales chart. Tragically, St. Pere passed away unexpectedly in 2021, triggering another period of silence for the band. With drummer Jason Gerkin filling his place, Hum returned to the stage earlier this year at Slide Away Festival.
