Rise Against brings the RICOCHET Tour across North America this fall with a stop in NYC at The Rooftop at Pier 17 on September 30th with support from “Windy City brethren” Alkaline Trio and Teen Mortgage.
Formed in Chicago in 1999, Rise Against, originally consisting of vocalist and guitarist Tim McIlrath, bassist Joe Principe, guitarist Dan Wleklinski, and drummer Toni Tintari, got their start in the underground punk scene with 2001’s The Unraveling and 2003’s Revolutions Per Minute before signing to major label Geffen Records for 2004’s Siren Song of the Counter Culture. By 2007, they had assumed their current four-piece form with the addition of drummer Brandon Barnes and guitarist Zach Blair. The band’s breakthrough album, 2008’s Appeal to Reason (co-produced by Descendants’ Bill Stevenson), on which McIlrath’s gravelly vocals became clearer and more melodic without the music abandoning its aggressive, fast-paced sound, debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 200 and included the hit single, “Savior,” which became the second longest standing song to date on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart at 65 weeks.
The band has continued to release ferocious music throughout the 2010s and 2020s, with most reaching the top 10 on the Hot 200, the most recent being 2025’s Ricochet, which explored themes of interconnectedness. To mark the momentous occasion of their tenth studio album, the band wanted to try and make something different by teaming up with Grammy-winning producer Catherine Marks (St. Vincent, boygenius), who was “largely unfamiliar with the Rise Against world. Therefore, she’s not beholden to any idea of what we should sound like.” The result is an album with a refreshingly unique sound that revisits the old with songs like “Damage Is Done,” which features a riff they had been workshopping for over 15 years, and takes it in new directions on songs like “Black Crown,” which was co-written by Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra (who also sang on the track). Known for their political messages, call-to-action anthems, and massive concerts, as Rise Against evolves, they continue to rock with the same riotous energy that has always been infused in their sound since their underground punk upbringing.
