Twenty years of Inter Arma! The extreme metal band celebrates their 20th anniversary with an exclusive U.S. tour featuring “a special set of material from the last two decades,” landing in NYC at Saint Vitus on October 15th with support from Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean.
Formed in Richmond, Virginia in 2006, Inter Arma now consists of vocalist Mike Paparo, drummer T.J. Childers, guitarists Steven Russell and Trey Dalton, and bassist Joel Moore. In 2010, they released their debut album, Sundown, which was heavily praised by the metal press for its seamless blend of Southern doom metal, psychedelic sludge, black metal, prog, heavy metal, and hardcore. Earning the attention of Relapse Records, the band released their first album through the label, Sky Burial, in 2013, continuing with their mix of genres and including softer, shorter songs, like the soaring steel guitar and piano-filled ballad “The Long Road Home (Iron Gate),” alongside large-scale, heavy epics.
Inter Arma has continued to release albums with Relapse throughout the past decade that explore the addition of atmospherics to their brutal sound, including moments that capture their unique vision, such as 2014’s 46 minute, one-track single, “The Cavern,” and 2020’s Garbers Days Revisited covers album, which paired metal classics with unexpected hits from artists including Prince and Tom Petty. Described as “a virtual symphony of pummeling, dissonant riffs sculpted with unrelenting precision” by Pitchfork, Inter Arma have been making a massive impact on the metal scene for the past twenty years with their crushing live shows and penchant for challenging and forceful music that balances relentless intensity and haunting beauty.
